California Wonder is the classic blocky bell pepper introduced in 1928, still the standard for home gardens. For PNW success, also consider King of the North (bred for short seasons) or Gypsy (early hybrid, prolific).
Peppers love heat and will struggle in cool PNW summers. Choose early-maturing varieties (65-75 days). Use black plastic mulch or landscape fabric to warm soil. Bainbridge summers are typically mild, but peppers produce well in the warmest garden microclimate — south-facing, against a wall or fence. Expect 5-10 peppers per plant. Harvest green for more production, or wait for full color for sweeter flavor.
Start indoors 8-10 weeks before last frost (early February in Zone 8b). Transplant when soil reaches 60°F and nights stay above 50°F — typically late May on Bainbridge. Space 18" apart (1 per sq ft). Pinch off early flowers to encourage stronger roots and earlier fruiting. Stake or cage; peppers get top-heavy. Feed with balanced organic fertilizer at transplant and again when first fruits set. Harvest when fruits reach full color for maximum sweetness.
