Musselburgh is a Scottish heirloom dating to the 1830s, prized for thick white stalks and winter hardiness. In the PNW, it stands reliably in the ground from September through February.

Regional Context

Musselburgh normally starts in February/March for full-size stalks. A mid-April sowing produces smaller but usable leeks through fall. Bay Hay often carries leek sets if you want the faster path.

Growing Technique

Direct sow 1/4 inch deep, 2-3 seeds per hole, thin to 1. Hill soil around the stalk every 2-3 weeks once plants are pencil-thick to blanch the white part. Skip hilling and you get scallions.

Watch For

Leek moth is appearing in the PNW (Vancouver Island has it). Floating row cover during peak moth flight (May-June, August) if you see damage.
