Sugaree is a sugar snap variety bred for shorter vines (tops out around 5 feet) with good PNW powdery mildew tolerance. Packet contains approximately 40-60 seeds.

Regional Context

Peas can be sown earlier than most crops (40 degree F+ soil). In the PNW, spring (April) and fall (early July) sowings produce two harvests. A 40-60 seed packet covers one round.

Growing Technique

Soak seeds 4-6 hours before sowing. Direct sow 1 inch deep, 8 per sq ft on trellis (two staggered rows of 4). Trellis 5-6 ft tall with chicken wire, twine grid, or pea netting. Do not fertilize with nitrogen -- peas fix their own. Pick daily once pods are plump but crisp.

Watch For

Powdery mildew hits in late June/July. Pull plants promptly when production drops -- do not let them linger and spread spores. Sugaree has decent resistance.
