Growing Technique

Direct sow as soon as soil can be worked — radishes germinate at 40°F. Sow 1/2" deep, 16 seeds per sq ft. Succession sow every 2 weeks through May, then stop until September (radishes bolt in heat). They mature fast — 21-30 days. Thin promptly: crowded radishes will not bulb. Keep consistently moist — dry soil makes radishes woody and excessively hot. Harvest as soon as roots reach size (about 1" diameter for Cherry Belle) — over-mature radishes become pithy and inedible.

Watch For

  • Bolting (flowering without bulbing) from heat or long days — stop sowing by June, resume in September. Flea beetles pepper leaves with tiny holes — floating row cover if severe. Too much nitrogen produces all tops and no bulbs. Inconsistent watering causes splitting. Forget them for a week and they are woody and so spicy they are inedible.
