Shiraz is a deep red beet with good greens. Two packets purchased -- one for spring sowing, one for July succession.

Regional Context

Beets germinate at 50 degree F+ soil temp, fine for mid-April. Consistent moisture and moderate nitrogen are key; too much N gives all tops and no bulb.

Growing Technique

Each seed is a cluster of 2-4 seeds. Soak 4 hours before sowing to speed germination. Direct sow 1/2 inch deep, thin to 1 per hole by snipping. Harvest when bulbs are 2-3 inches across. Harvest greens too -- take 1-2 outer leaves per plant. Sow succession every 3-4 weeks through July.

Watch For

Overwatering causes cracked roots. Underwatering produces woody, tough beets. Both are common in the PNW where spring swings between deluge and dry spells.
