Variety History

Yellow Crookneck has been grown in North America since at least the 1700s, likely originating from Native American cultivation. It remains one of the most popular summer squash varieties.

Summer squash is a rockstar in PNW gardens. Start after May 15. Yellow crookneck is a Southern classic that also thrives here with our mild summers. Productive from July through first frost.

Growing Technique

Same as zucchini: direct sow late May, 1 per sq ft. Yellow crookneck and straightneck types are bush habit, not vining. Harvest at 4-6" for tender skin and small seeds. Pick frequently — overripe squash become woody and reduce plant productivity.

Watch For

  • Same powdery mildew issues as zucchini — space for airflow, water at soil level. Squash bugs (shield-shaped brown insects) suck sap from leaves and stems — hand-pick adults, scrape copper-colored egg clusters from leaf undersides. Bacterial wilt spread by cucumber beetles — remove infected plants immediately.
